Hip Arthroscopy Surgery

 Arthroscopy
is a technical term for keyhole surgery of any joint. The hip joint has
long been regarded as a difficult joint to arthroscope as it is a ball and
socket joint and, very deeply seated.
Hip
Arthroscopy involves placing several small incisions around the hip that allows
a small camera and instruments access to the hip joint. The minimally
invasiveness of this procedure allows for minimal scarring, outpatient surgery,
early rehabilitation/return to sports, and faster recovery.
Before
Hip Arthroscopy, a traditional open procedure was utilized which required a
large incision and dislocation of the hip. This had the potential of causing
more soft tissue damage, increased complications, bleeding and pain.

procedures commonly performed with Hip Arthroscopy are:
Labral Tears
Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI)
Loose Bodies

Labral Tears
:
The
labrum of the hip is a cuff of thick tissue that surrounds the hip socket. It
works in a very similar way to a rubber washer or gasket. The labrum helps to
keep fluid inside the joint and also functions to stabilize the hip joint. When
a labral tear of the hip occurs, a piece of this tissue can become pinched in
the joint causing pain and catching sensations.
Hip
Arthroscopy can help treat this condition by either repairing the labrum using
small anchors and stitches or by debriding the torn piece. Repairing of the
labrum is preferred by Dr. Wagner since it helps restore the hip’s normal
anatomy and labral function.
Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) : Femoroacetabular
Impingement (FAI) is caused from the side of the femoral head impinging on the
acetabulum (hip socket). The impinging can be caused from an overgrowth of bone
either on the femoral head, acetabulum, or a combination of these. Often this
impinging can cause labral tears, cartilage tears or early arthritis.
Hip Arthroscopy is used to trim back the overgrowth of bone so
that the impinging no longer occurs. At the same time any concurrent injuries
to the labrum or cartilage can be addressed.
Loose Bodies
:
Sometimes loose bodies, typically from cartilage or bone, can cause
instability of the hip joint. This can cause a person to experience a sudden,
sharp pain in the hip, sometimes causing them to fall. These loose bodies can
be taken out arthroscopically and allows the patient to resume full activities
sometimes within days after the surgery.
Cartilage Tears :
Typically seen with FAI, cartilage tears can cause instability of the hip,
pain, and can continue to get bigger without treatment.Hip
Arthroscopy can be used to trim out the unstable cartilage, or
possibly perform a microfracture of the bone to stimulate the growth of new
cartilage.

A total hip replacement, or total hip
arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which the arthritic portions of the hip
are removed and replaced with a new, artificial joint. The new hip joint
consists of 2 components, one to replace the head of the femur (the ball part
of the thigh bone) and another which replaces the socket (acetabulum).
Advances in techniques and materials achieved in recent years have resulted in
excellent outcomes and very high patient satisfaction, with significant pain
relief and improvement in quality of life. Patients are able to perform day to
day activities such as sitting, walking and driving much more comfortable than
before.
